These assays are performed on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) instruments (Biacore, Pioneer). SPR offers substantial benefits for binding measurements in biochemical and pharmacological studies. The interacting partners are not modified obviating the danger of a spurious or modified interaction caused by a label. The measurements are very sensitive and require small amounts of reagents. Most importantly, SPR technology can generate both equilibrium binding data and measurements of the kinetics of interactions.
